Remain busy in service

Baba says, “Maya cannot come to those who remain constantly busy, because they do not have time to receive Maya.”

Brahmin life means a life of remembrance and service. There has to be a balance between the two. If I am truly a constant yogi, then I am also a constant server. Often though, I do one or the other, I either remember or I serve but rarely do both. Also many think that when it comes to service, one can only do it when given a chance. Others say that they can serve if they have the means or time. But Baba says that just as I can remain in constant remembrance, I can also remain a constant server.

There are four different ways to serve, teaches Baba.

First, service of the self. This involves paying attention to the self in becoming complete and perfect. I have to make myself pass with honors in all the subjects of this study- I have to become an embodiment of knowledge, of remembrance and of dharna. I have to become complete in everything. This has to always remain in my intellect such that I take steps towards fulfilling this aim. This is serving the self. No one needs to give me a chance for this service, neither does it require means or special time. All I need is attention and checking- of the self, not others.

Second, world service. This, I already do in various ways- through public programs, exhibitions, workshops, distributing leaflets, through words, through relationships and connections. Maybe, I am not even in the same country that a program is being organized in, or maybe I don’t have the means to participate physically, but I can certainly still get involved through serving through my mind. I can still send powerful vibrations of peace and love such that the atmosphere at the venue becomes powerful or I can send good wishes to the volunteers and attendees. This has no constraints. Third, service of the yagya which I do with my body and wealth.

The fourth is service through the mind. Wherever I live, I can serve many souls with my pure feelings, elevated wishes, elevated attitude and elevated vibrations. The method for this is to become a light and might house. Just as a lighthouse is able to serve lost ships from one place, similarly, I too can become the living lighthouse that serves many souls. But this requires that I first of all have accumulated many powers within myself. This type of service does not require a chance or time or physical facilities to do. I can do it any time, all the time, from anywhere. I simply need to be full of light and might. If my mind and intellect has waste thoughts, then I might be able to teach the course but I cannot serve with my mind. That requires a stable, clean and clear mind. A lighthouse is always built atop a rock, never on the sand. No matter how hard the waves crash against the rock, the lighthouse remains stable, uninfluenced. It has to be the same with me- I have to be free from mood swings, free from the waste of what he/she said/did etc. In other words, my mind should be in the state of ‘manmanabhav’.

If I can keep myself busy in these four types of service, I will become a constant server and because of being constantly occupied in service, because of being constantly busy, I will easily become a conqueror of Maya. “Out of all the four types of service, do whatever service you can when you can but don’t deprive yourself of doing service for even a second. You have to serve all 24 hours.”, explains Baba. I am not a yogi or a server for just 8 hours, but a yogi and server for life. If nothing else, the service of the self is good and always available. Even if the body is ill, I can still serve the self and serve the world through my mind.

Sometimes, I think that there is more accumulated when I serve through words, but if I am unable to do that or not given the chance, then I lose out. But Baba says that all four types of service are equally important. I will receive just as much marks from serving the yagya or from serving the self or from serving through the mind as I will if I serve through words. They are all equal. The point is to never wait around for a certain kind of service to be available or give up because I lack the means to do it, rather, I have to keep busy doing any one of types of service all the time.

As children, you have a huge responsibility.”, says Baba. I am God’s helper in the greatest task of world transformation! “How busy should those who have such a responsibility of service be?“, asks Baba, “Would they have time to think about anything else?” “You children have become Brahmins to remain constantly busy. Those who remain busy easily become conqueror of Maya and conquerors of the world every cycle.”
