Check your attachments

Baba says, “In the mirror of completion, check your attachments. Give this gift to Father Brahma on his day of remembrance.”

The first lesson on my spiritual journey is the answer to the question: Who am I? I understand that I am a soul, not the body. This one thought is like turning on the light switch such that all the darkness of ignorance is dispelled and I come into the light. After stumbling for birth after birth, I start to see things clearly again. The final lesson of this study or this journey is also the same as the first; while the first lesson is realization, the final lesson is to become an embodiment of that realization. The journey in between is to shed the attachments or bondages that get in the way of my becoming an embodiment. This is why the final chapter in the Gita is: The conqueror of attachments and embodiment of remembrance (nashto mohah smritir labdha).

The final episode of the Gita is playing out right now“, explains Baba. “Each of you has one or another form of attachment, numberwise. If this attachment were to finish, then the world would change.” “Check yourself“, He says, “to see if there is any type of attachment: whether it is attachment in the form of thoughts or attachment in relationships, attachment in your connections or attachment to any of your specialties.” Even if there is attachment to specialties, then that too brings me into bondage; it would not allow me to become free from bondage. Attachment, Baba explains, neither allows me to become bodiless nor a world benefactor. ”How can those who are trapped in their own attachments give the inheritance of liberation and liberation-in-life to the world?“, He asks. Those who have attachment can never become full of all the powers because the attachment will overpower them. For example, if someone receives credit for an idea I had, when I am attached to the idea as ‘my idea’, then I might not be able to use my controlling power; I will be too overcome with anger and disheartenment, bitterness and resentment. Similarly, if an idea I had doesn’t get accepted, then too, when there is attachment, I feel disheartened.

Your final thoughts lead you to your final destination“, Baba reminds me. When there is attachment to people or things, then in the final moments, that attachment is what will pull my mind. Those are the thoughts I will have. “Ask yourself“, says Baba: “Will I be able to take birth at the beginning of the golden age? Only those who make a lot of effort will take birth at the beginning of the golden age; they cannot remain hidden.” “Merge the expansion of your life and become the same as the Father“, He teaches. In order to be able to do this, I need to become an embodiment of remembrance. There is attachment when the awareness is that “I am a householder”. When I feel that it is ‘my home’, ‘my relations’, then there is attachment. “When you have surrendered your body, mind and wealth to the Father, then, having given it all to Baba, how can there be the words: my idea, my understanding or my nature or my relatives or my responsibilities? Is it still ‘mine’ or has the ‘mine’ become ‘Yours’?“, He asks.

To have the consciousness of ‘mine’, ‘mine’, Baba explains, is to be like monkeys! They themselves may die but their consciousness of ‘mine’ will not die. This is why artists have portrayed mahavirs with the symbol of a tail. They are mahavirs, but they definitely have a tail. “So, what is this tail? That of attachment.“, teaches Baba. “Until you set this tail on fire, Lanka cannot be burnt. When the fire of love of all mahavirs is ablaze, then would this old world still remain?“, asks Baba. “Therefore, now finish all types of attachment.
