Baba says, “The first lesson of the knowledge of the Gita is: Become a bodiless soul. The final lesson is: Become a conqueror of attachment and an embodiment of remembrance.”
This spiritual study is the true Gita, teaches Baba. The very first lesson of this study is the answer to the riddle: Who am I? I learn that I am a pure soul, not the body. The final lesson is to become the embodiment of this truth. The journey in between is to shed all the bondages, the attachments that are in the way of my becoming the embodiment of who I truly am. As I shed my own attachments, I also help my brothers and sisters in the world to shed theirs and become liberated as well. “But while liberating others, don’t tie yourself in bondage“, cautions Baba. Sometimes, I pay attention to renouncing all attachments in the world- for example, I renounce my attachment to my physical children, friends etc. but then I replace that with attachment to students, and service companions. I see someone with a certain skillset, or a particular talent or a virtue and I become impressed. I think: “This one is so good, this one is so talented…” etc. and just like that I tie myself in bondage by having the thought that this student belongs to me or that I should always serve alongside this soul etc. “You break free from the iron chains and tie yourself into golden chains.“, explains Baba.
To become liberated from the limited consciousness of “mine” is called becoming karmateet. It is giving the proof of my love to BapDada because after coming to Him, the only thing “mine” is Him. My aim is to become free from attachments, to become karmateet; “so now check to what extent you have become free from the bondage of karma“, teaches Baba. First thing to check, He says, is if I am free from the feeling of any selfish motives in both lokik and alokik in actions and relationships. Do I have pure spiritual love and respect for all souls or do I love souls based on a special talent or skill or virtue? Second, I have to check if I have become free from the karmic accounts of my actions of the past births and free from the influence of a wasteful nature and sanskars due to slackness in effort at the present time. “If any weak nature or sanskars of the past influence you at any time, then you are tied in bondage, not free from bondage.”, explains Baba. To think or say things like: I didn’t mean for this to happen but my nature and sanskars made me do it, is a sign of one who is tied in bondage. Also, if any situation, person, circumstance, gathering or the elements make my original stage fluctuate, then that too is a sign of being tied in bondage. Thirdly, I have to become free from any upheaval of my elevated stage that may come through illness of the body. “It is one thing for an illness to come and another thing for that illness to make you fluctuate.“, explains Baba. “The illness comes because it is destined to come but for your stage to fluctuate is a sign of being tied in bondage.“, He teaches.
To become an embodiment of who I truly am means to become free from all bondages, even from thoughts about them. For example, to think of a situation, to worry about my circumstance, to have thoughts of dislike for a soul or to be impressed by a soul, all these are bondages. Instead, Baba says, I have to have thoughts of the original self, thoughts of knowledge and have pure and positive thoughts for others. This is called being in the karmateet stage. “Although people study the Gita etc., they don’t understand the meaning of it at all. You who study this true Gita carry a big responsibility to be the sample before the world.“, says Baba. A sample is important, a sample is an inspiration to become like that. People who read the Gita don’t understand what they are reading, however, when they see a practical example, they get the idea. So the first thing is to always have the awareness that I am a sample. Next, Baba says, is to remember my symbol – a lotus flower. The symbol helps me remember that no matter what is going on, I have to remain detached and loving. The awareness of being a sample and awareness of the symbol helps me remain cautious about not allowing myself to get tied into attachments or bondages.
“So now become an embodiment of the first lesson and bring this stage in front of the world in a practical way”, teaches Baba. “This is known as becoming equal to the Father.“
