Baba says, “Become first-class flowers by studying well with the Father. In order to make this forest of thorns into a garden of flowers, become the Father’s full helpers.”
Service is the very breath of Brahmin life; every child considers themselves as a helper of the Father in His unlimited task of world transformation. God reminds me daily about how I can help Him transform the world: “It starts with the self”, He teaches me, “self-transformation will lead to world transformation.” It’s easy enough to give lectures on various topics: “How to overcome stress”, “How to stay calm in the storm”, “How to forgive” or conduct ‘anger management’ workshops for others. But Baba keeps coming back to self-transformation because, He explains, I cannot help others become peaceful if I am peaceless myself. I cannot help others conquer anger if I, myself, still struggle with it. If I hold bitterness and grudges, I cannot expect others to learn how to forgive.
Again and again, I continue to say: “May sanskars are like this, that’s why it happened.”, “That wasn’t my intention, that wasn’t my aim, but it just happened.” Or I say: “I didn’t get angry, it’s just how I speak.” These are temporary sanskars, these are habits I acquired over the course of my journey through the cycle. “Use your eternal sanskars to transform your temporary sanskars. When your eternal sanskars emerge, all those different obstacles will automatically and easily finish. Baba cannot bear to see His children having to labor even now in the service of self-transformation and world transformation.”, He says. “How is it possible”, He asks, “that you are God’s helpers and you still have to labor!?”
The reason, He teaches, is a small mistake I make. Rather than think of myself as “God’s helper”, I think of myself simply as a “helper”. I make myself ordinary and therefore my thinking, speech and behavior all become ordinary. Those who are God’s helpers automatically remember God and His service. They don’t separate the two. Even in the world today, if someone is not being co-operative, they say to him: “Do this task in the name of God” because they understand that co-operation and success will come when something is done in the name of God. When it seems that something is impossible or hopeless, it is said: “Take God’s name and your work will be accomplished.” I am God’s helper, not just someone who just takes the name of God. I have actually become His companion, practically, to accomplish the task of world transformation with Him. So nothing is impossible for me. Everything is possible and easy. That Sanskar, that bitterness, that grudge, that unforgiveness, that regret, that anger…all of it can be transformed…with the right awareness. When I remember that I am God’s helper, that I am engaged in His task, then, I will not find transformation hard. I will pay attention, remain alert and be determined to change.
I will remember that God comes every cycle to transform the world and each time, I become His helper. So this is nothing new, I have accomplished this transformation many times before with God; I will again. “Because you are the Father’s companions, the questions “Will it happen or not?” or “How will it happen?” do not arise. Everything has been accomplished so far just by taking God’s name. Therefore, every task is already successful for the children who serve with God.”, explains Baba. “If while moving along, you sometimes experience failure or difficulty, the reason is that you have just become a helper; you aren’t God’s helper.”, He teaches.
It is when I see myself as just a helper or as just doing service, that I see other’s wrongs and become angry, or I get into competition or want to prove myself or harbor bitterness because of what someone said or did etc. When I see myself as God’s helper, then competition doesn’t exist, it is meaningless. There is nothing to prove, I have already been chosen by God! When I see myself as God’s helper, there is neither arrogance nor insult, neither praise nor defamation. There is no task that is big or small, every task is important.
“Because you separate God from yourself and from His service, you make both yourself and the service ordinary”, He explains. “You become alone, something easy becomes difficult and your destination of success seems to be very far away. However, you are called “God’s helpers”. Therefore, don’t separate what is combined.”, He teaches. “When you constantly remember this title of yours, the service will automatically be filled with God’s magic.”
So, rather than think I am doing service, I have to think: I am God’s helper, doing God’s service. “Do not think“, He says, “that “I am doing this”, but think: “God is doing this through me.”” By having this awareness, I can easily finish the seed of all obstacles for all time. I can easily bring about self-transformation and then, every part of my being- my vision, my attitude, my speech, my behavior will have the power to bring about world transformation.
