Be totally ignorant of desire

Baba says, “In order to be saved from being deceived by Maya, do not have any kind of desire. Be totally ignorant of desire.”

The description of the final, perfect form of a Brahmin, Baba teaches, is of one who is ignorant of all desire. “When you reach this stage, cries of victory and distress will be heard.“, He explains. For this, I would first have to become a satisfied soul. To the extent that I am satisfied, I will accordingly be ignorant of desire. Maybe I have renounced desire for gross things, for material possessions but more often than not, I still have the subtle desire to be appreciated, to be recognized, to at least be acknowledged for all the service I do. This subtle desire becomes an obstacle on my path to becoming good. How so? Because this desire for recognition and appreciation causes me to think, speak and act in ways that are unbecoming of a pure, elevated soul. I sulk when I am not acknowledged, I become bitter when I see others praised and soon that bitterness makes me resentful. I spend my days strategizing about how to gain visibility, rather than concerning myself with real service- forging a relationship of souls with the Father. “You have come here to change into a deity“, Baba reminds me. Deities are selfless, they don’t need recognition, they bestow without expectation or demand, like the Father.

BapDada never has any desire for fruit of His acts, in the same way, you must never desire any fruit of your acts even in your thoughts.“, He teaches. “Put aside any desire for fruit and become completely ignorant of all desire.

To desire fruit means I cannot have an altruistic attitude like the Father. Even while knowing the reward of effort, I must have no attachment to it. When I pay special attention to someone who praises me, that too, Baba explains, is like accepting fruit in a subtle way. “By performing one elevated act, you receive one hundred-fold fruit in return, but you have to remain ignorant of all temporary and limited desire.“, He teaches. “Desires finishes all good acts. Desire finishes all cleanliness so that, instead of having cleanliness, you become one who thinks too much about everything. Therefore, you have to become ignorant of even the knowledge of desire.

Father Brahma was humble and gave respect to the children. He always put the children first. He had the children’s name praised and yet did everything himself. He renounced any attainment of his name being praised for the work that he did. He kept the children as masters while he considered himself their server and served them. He relinquished any regard, prestige, and praise as a master. He never glorified his own name, but always said: “My children!” So, follow the father in the same way, teaches Baba. If I do some service and then accept the fruit of that service at the same time, I cannot accumulate anything. It is like earning and using simultaneously. “You won’t then have any will power, you will be weak internally, you won’t become powerful but instead feel empty inside.“, He teaches. “When you stop this, you will then automatically have an incorporeal, egoless and viceless stage.

In fact, the more I am detached from all desire, the more all my desires are easily fulfilled. Having one desire or another obstructs me from being able to face anything. For as long as I still have the desire to glorify my own name or feel that I am “such-and-such” and ask why no one sought my advice, or why my opinion isn’t valued, there will be obstacles in service. “Therefore, renounce any desire for regard and remain stable in your self-respect. Then, regard will follow you like a shadow.“, teaches Baba. “Don’t ask for facilities but be a bestower and give what you have to others.“, teaches Baba.

Sometimes, it’s not a desire for reward or recognition, I have a desire for justice. “What they did is not fair. They should apologize…” or “How come I have to adjust all the time. Let them also change, let them also do something…”, or “Why do I have to do all the work, let them also co-operate..”. “Don’t become one who asks for justice.“, cautions Baba. When I ask for something, anything, even justice, I cannot experience myself to be fully content or satisfied. A great donor, Baba teaches, cannot have desires or beg like a beggar for even a penny. To ask for ‘rights’ or ‘justice’ is to become a beggar, He says. “If any of your family, co-operative brothers or sisters, due to not understanding or due to childish stubbornness, considers a temporary thing to be a permanent attainment or wants name, regard, or honor, then become humble and give them respect.“, He teaches. “This form of giving becomes a form of receiving for all time.” It is good to become a beggar in this way, that is, have no temporary desire. But it is wrong to be a beggar for temporary attainment. “For as long as you don’t experience the world to be tasteless, for as long as your intellect doesn’t feel that everyone is already dead, it is possible that you would still desire some form of attainment.“, cautions Baba. “However, those who remain constantly lost in the sweetness of the One would have a constant and stable stage. They wouldn’t want to attain anything from a corpse. No perishable sweetness would attract them.

The Father says: “Your stage of being ignorant of all desires is the basis of you enabling your devotee souls to receive all attainments. Only when you yourself become ignorant of all desires will you be able to fulfill the desires of many other souls. Have no desires for yourself but think about how to fulfill the desires of others, then you, yourself, will automatically become full. Now, have the determined thought to fulfill the desires of all the souls of the world. Just as giving is receiving, so too, Baba explains, to fulfill the desires of others is to make oneself full. Always aim to become an idol through which everyone’s desires are fulfilled.
